The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is to build up a point of view among the grassroot level that an election is required before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April this year.

They are to kick off a programme in this regard from Jan. 15, reports claim.

Founder of the SLPP – Basil Rajapaksa, is currently handling party affairs from the US and is expected to return to Sri Lanka by the end of the month.

It is planned to hold a discussion with the President requesting for an election after his return. In the event that the discussion proves to be futile, the SLPP is reportedly planning to table a proposal to Parliament, demanding an election.

Meanwhile, speaking to ‘theleader.lk‘, senior leader of the UNP – Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to hold a Presidential election in 2024 September and a General Election in 2025 January.

Speaking further at the recently held Management committee meeting of the UNP, the President has also said that the LG polls will be held in March.
