709 killed in road accidents in first 4 months of 2023!

A total of 709 people have died in road accidents in the first four months of this year, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

He said that the highest number of accidents were motorcycle accidents.

“As of April 30, 2023, 8,202 accidents have occurred. There have been 667 fatal accidents in which 709 people died. A total of 2,160 serious accidents and 3,201 minor accidents have occurred.”

“The highest number of people who died were motorcyclists. Out of the 709 people who died, 220 were motorcyclists, 102 were passengers and 179 were pedestrians.”

“Most of these fatal accidents are caused by motorcyclists followed by three-wheelers. Therefore, it is very important for the motorcyclists as well as three-wheeler drivers to pay more attention to traffic rules,” he said.

2nd round of Grade 06 admission appeals open online today

The Ministry of Education has announced that online appeals for the second round of Grade 06 admissions in 2025, based on the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination results, can be submitted from today (July 03) until July 17.

Parents or guardians can submit appeals for up to three schools by visiting the official website of the Ministry of Education at www.moe.gov.lk or directly via the extension at g6application.moe.gov.lk.

Several showers expected today

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts today (July 03), the Department of Meteorology said.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Meanwhile, fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Kahawatte OIC transferred

The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kahawatte Police has been transferred to the Jaffna Police Division to facilitate the investigation into the youth who was shot dead on June 30 in Kahawatte, Police said.

A 22-year-old youth died while another was critically injured in a shooting incident in the Yainna area of Kahawatte.
