78th session UNGA, commences

The 78th session of the UN General Assembly commenced at the UNHQ in New York earlier today (19), which was attended by the Sri Lankan delegation led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Addressing the gathering, the UN Secretary-General – Antonio Guterres welcomed the heads of state in attendance.

Probe over political questions in school exam paper

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced that an immediate investigation has been launched at the ministerial level regarding questions of a political nature being included in a school term exam paper.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. J.M. Thilaka Jayasundara, noted that relevant officials have already been provided with instructions to address the issue.

The investigation pertains to the inclusion of five questions related to a political party in the Common General Test paper provided to Advanced Level students during the second term examination at C.W.W. Kannangara Central College in the Kalutara District.

The Secretary clarified that the controversial question paper was prepared solely by the school and has no affiliation with the ministry or any other external institution.

Necessary actions will be taken following the probe, she added.

Special transport measures in place

Special transport measures have been set in place for the public who will be returning to their respective hometowns and villages to cast their votes.

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) instructed all depots to deploy their existing bus fleets for operations until next Monday (18) to meet transport demands.

In addition to the normal timetable, extra buses will operate in key areas. 

70 extra buses will operate in Gampaha, Kalutara, and Colombo today (12), with another 80 buses scheduled for Colombo Fort tomorrow (13).

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Railways also say that additional carriages have been deployed to meet the transport demand.

2 departments issue special notices

The Department of Examinations has issued a special notice regarding the issuance of exam certificates.

Accordingly, the department announces that the issuing of exam certificates will not be carried out on November 14 due to the departmental staff being deployed for election duties.

Furthermore, the examination department stated that all service counters and the online service will not be operational on Thursday (14).

Meanwhile, the Department for Registration of Persons states also that all public services, including the one-day service, will not be available on November 14.
