Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has announced his candidacy for the upcoming Local Government Elections under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) ticket from Hambantota District.
Rajapaksa, who is a former Speaker of Parliament and the elder brother of former Presidents – Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Responding to queries by media, as to why he, as a former Speaker, is contesting the Local Government Elections, Rajapaksa had stated, “That’s very normal. We have our ups and downs – so, I am starting again from the beginning.”
He had also added that the SLPP candidate list includes young candidates, women and senior politicians.
