Champika reappointed as chairman of Ways and Means committee

MP Patali Champika Ranawaka has been reappointed as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Ways and Means.

Following a unanimous decision by committee members MPs Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Wasantha Yapa Bandara, Anura Jayaratne, W.D.J. Seneviratne, Sisira Jayakody, Udaya Kirindigoda and Sanjeewa Edirimanna, MP Champika had been unanimously proposed by Wasantha Yapa Bandara and seconded by Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

Following his exclusion earlier this year, MP Champika had alleged that his exclusion from the committee was influenced by individuals connected to the sugar scam and liquor deals.

In addition, Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa announced to Parliament today (20) that MP Champika has also been appointed as a member of the Committee On Public Finance (CoPF).

Infant’s body found inside parked trishaw

The body of an infant stuffed in a fertilizer sack was from a three-wheeler parked near several line houses in the Henfold Tea Estate, in the Agarapathana Police division.

The discovery was made by the three-wheeler driver’s mother, who had noticed a strong odor emanating from the three-wheeler.

Agarapathana Police said that the preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver of the three-wheeler, who is a resident of the same estate, had returned home this morning (Sep. 10) after going on a hire and had parked the three-wheeler himself.

Police also said that facts will be reported to the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court concerning the infant’s body, and further investigations will be conducted.

The prices of Milco milk powder have been reduced effective from today (Sep 10).

The price of a 400g milk powder packet has been reduced by Rs. 75, to Rs. 1,050.

Meanwhile, the price of a 1kg packet has been reduced by Rs. 190 to Rs. 2,585.

Grade 5 Scholarship : Tuition classes banned from midnight tomorrow

Conducting tuition classes, seminars and other workshops targeting the 2024 Grade 05 Scholarship Examination is prohibited from midnight tomorrow (Sep. 11).

The Commissioner General of Examinations – Amith Jayasundara announced that the printing and distribution of model question papers related to the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination is also prohibited.

It is also strictly prohibited to publish or distribute posters, banners, handouts, or promotion via electronic, printed, or social media that suggest exam questions or similar questions will be provided to students.

The Commissioner General of Examinations emphasized that any individual, institution, or party found violating these orders can be reported to the nearest police station, police headquarters, or the Examination Department.

The Grade 5 Scholarship Exam for the year 2024 is scheduled to be held on September 15.
