The government has decided to rehabilitate the prisoners who have been sentenced to death.

Accordingly, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that six centres have been established within the prisons to rehabilitate prisoners who have been sentenced to death.

“For the first time since 1934, steps have been taken to amend prison regulations in a humane manner. About 26,000 people are currently detained in prisons and about 8,000 of them have been convicted,” the minister said.

However, the decision of the Prisons Department to spend extra funds to rehabilitate those sentenced to death has been criticized by many on social media sites.
