The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) said that issues have arisen over the tare weight of electric three-wheelers during the process of registration.
According to the interpretation of the Motor Vehicle Act, the tare weight of a three-wheeler should not exceed 500 kg.
Since the tare weight of electric three-wheelers is higher compared to the tare weight of a normal three-wheeler, it has become an issue to register them under the three-wheeler category.
When converting a three-wheeler that runs on petrol or diesel to be able to run on electricity, electrically charged batteries are used. Three-wheelers with such batteries also go beyond the tare weight of 500 kgs.
As a result, it has become impossible to register electric three-wheelers.
To avoid this issue, it has been decided to revise the tare weight of electric three-wheelers to 600 kg.
