Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando said that plans have been made to import 30 million eggs per month through the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation.

He said this in response to a question raised by journalists following a ceremony held at Kapuwatta in Kandana on March 31.

The minister said the imported eggs would only be sold to bakeries and hotels.

He said that imported eggs will not be distributed throughout the country, and that these eggs will be brought in subject to all the approvals of the Cabinet.

“It goes without saying that egg producers exploited the consumers,” he alleged.

However, an investigation by Sri Lanka Mirror revealed that about USD 1.8 million should be spent in order to import 30 million eggs per month from India.

It was reported that the wholesale price of eggs in India is between 20 and 21 Sri Lankan rupees.

Accordingly, if eggs were imported for Rs.20 each, about Rs.600 million will have to be spent to import 30 million eggs.
