Five million new passports ordered

The Department of Immigration said that five million passports with new security measures have been ordered and these passports will be despatched to Sri Lanka soon.

The Department also stated that the country will receive 50,000 passports by September 15. After receiving the new passports, the current congestion will be avoided.

Until then, the issuing of new passports will have to be limited to 1,000 daily, the Department of Immigration and Emigration stated.

Last month, the Department of Immigration and Emigration announced that the distribution of passports would be limited owing to a shortage of blank passports. In an official statement, the Department urged that only those with urgent needs should submit applications for passports. The Department announced the forthcoming introduction of new electronic passports, revealing that a contract has been granted to an international firm for this initiative.
