Foreign travel ban on Keheliya, Chandrapala & Rubasinghe

The Colombo High Court Yesterday (22) served indictments on three persons including Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, who are accused of causing a loss to the State by buying GI pipes for the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) when he was the Media Minister.

The other suspects are former SLRC Director Chandrapala Liyanage and its Chairman Wimalasena Rubasinghe.

High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe ordered the accused to pay cash bail of Rs.20,000 each and two sureties of Rs.500,000 each.

He also imposed a foreign travel ban on the accused until the case is completed and ordered the passports be handed over to the court.

The High Court judge ordered the judicial police to release Minister Rambukwella as soon as possible since he had to attend Parliament to cast vote during the Budget.

The Bribery Commission filed the case under four indictments alleging that the accused caused a loss of Rs.990,000 to the State by arbitrarily buying 600 GI pipes for the SLRC on November 25, 2014 claiming it was for a promotional programme.

The High Court judge set the date for the pre-trial conference to be held on February 1, 2023. Counsel Hemantha Gamage appeared on behalf of Health Minister Rambukwella and informed the court that they expect to file a preliminary objection regarding the indictments.

The judge informed the counsel to submit the objection on the next court day and the case was postponed to February 1.

Showers expected after 2pm

Showers or thundershowers can be expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces after 2 p.m., the Department of Meteorology says.

Showers or thundershowers may occur over the coastal areas of Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota during the morning.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces in the morning.

The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea areas:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Matara via Hambantota. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle in the evening or night.

Winds will be south-easterly or variable and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.

Sea areas around the island will be slight.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Man who jumped off from Sri Pada, found alive

Nallathanniya Police said that the 33-year old Sri Pada pilgrim who went missing after jumping off the protective fence at the Mahamaluwa was found yesterday evening.

An official of the Nallathanniya Police Station said that this person in question is among a group of pilgrims from Suriyawewa, Hambantota who climbed Sri Pada mountain on April 19.

He had participated in religious observances before jumping off the protective fence at Mahamaluwa and thereafter went missing.

Security personnel from the Laxapana Army camp and Ricarton, STF camp in Nallathanniya launched an operation to trace the missing youth. But they couldn’t find him.

But a group of people from the Rajamale estate had informed the Nallathanniya Police about the recovery of a missing person yesterday. Nallathanniya Police took the man who was injured and admitted him to the Maskeliya Regional Hospital.

He was later transferred to Dickoya Hospital for further treatments.

The individual, Dinesh Hemantha, has informed the police that he cannot remember the incident involving leaping from the Mahamaluwa.

O/L tuition classes banned from May 1st

The Department of Examinations has announced the prohibition of tuition classes and seminars for the 2023 GCE Ordinary Level exam, effective from midnight on the 30th of April.

Deputy Commissioner of Examinations, Lasika Samarakoon, emphasized that strict measures will be taken against individuals found violating this regulation.

Preparations are underway for the GCE O/Level exam scheduled to take place from May 6-15.

Additionally, the Department of Examinations has revealed that the results of the recently concluded GCE Advanced Level examination will be released in May.
