The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday (25) that a set of guidelines has been formulated to prevent incidents of ragging in state universities. This announcement was made during the hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by Pasindu Harshana Silva, a student who was injured during a ragging incident at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, where a large backhoe tyre was rolled over his body.
Deputy Solicitor General Dr.Avanthi Perera, representing the Attorney General, revealed this information before the three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justices Shiran Gunaratne and Priyantha Fernando.
Dr.Perera stated that the comprehensive set of guidelines have been circulated to all universities for public consultation. The Chief Justice instructed that any necessary revisions be made based on the feedback, and that a final draft be submitted to the court.
The Deputy Solicitor General was further directed to take steps to file the final draft before the court. The petition was filed by Pasindu Harshana Silva, who was subjected to severe injuries during a ragging incident at the Sri Jayewardenepura University in 2020.
