An inmate who tried to escape the Kegalle Prison was shot dead by the prison officials.
According to police, the inmate tried to escape while he was engaged in early morning chores at the prison.
The victim, who suffered gunshot wounds, died after being admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
The deceased is a 33-year-old resident of Melsiripura, and he had been imprisoned over a maintenance case heard in the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court.
