The Rabies control program of the Ministry of Health (MoH) states that an islandwide census of the dog population in the country, will be conducted within the next two months. This census is done in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the related basic project proposal has been prepared and finalised for implementation.
The programme notes that out of the estimated 300,000 dogs in the country, most of them are living in homes as pets.
While killing of dogs is prohibited by law, vaccination, neutering and spaying are being done to keep the dog population under control.
