The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of Gampaha has launched a special investigation into the incident of two Gampaha police officers broking into a house in Divulapitiya on Saturday (27) in search of a suspect who allegedly stole musician Lahiru Perera’s piano and assaulting two men.

The father and son who were injured in the attack were hospitalised.

It was reported that a bakery in Gampaha belonging to the musician’s family members is being looked after by a member of this family.

Several musical instruments, including a piano belonging to the musician, have been stored in the building where the bakery was located.

The piano had gone missing a few days ago. The musician and his brother had said that it had been stolen by the family members who were looking after the bakery.

Accordingly, the Gampaha Police has also received a complaint in this regard.

Based on the complaint and on the instructions of the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Gampaha, the alleged suspect has been informed to be at his home at Salgaduwatte in Divulapitiya on Friday.

However, at around 1:00 a.m on Saturday, a group of civilians and two officers in police uniform had gone to the suspect’s house and attacked the father and son who were staying in the house at that time.

Residents have identified one of the officers and have lodged a complaint with the police stating that he is a sergeant working in the Gampaha Police.

Accordingly, a senior police officer said that investigations are being conducted to identify the other police officer.
