The National Elections Commission said that holding the Local Government (LG) elections on April 25 is highly unlikely.
A senior official said that it is problematic to hold the election on the scheduled date given the current situation.
The official said that considering the dates in line with the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Act No 16 of 2017, holding the election on April 25 would not be possible at all.
He pointed out that necessary funds for the election have not been received so far.
Meanwhile, the Elections Commission said Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has been requested for a meeting to discuss the upcoming elections but no opportunity has been given for a meeting yet.
