Massive fraud in purchase of rapid antigen test kits – Minister

Chief Government Whip and Health and Media Minister, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated in Parliament yesterday that the Health Ministry is investigating fraud committed in the purchase of rapid antigen test kits during the COVID period.

The Minister also said that Parliament will be informed about the details of this fraud in the future.

The Minister revealed that a company that was not registered with the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has spent the largest amount for the purchase of rapid antigen test kits.

In addition, Rs. 2.2 billion of public money has been spent on the purchase of two million rapid antigen test kits from this company.

The Minister said this in response to an oral question raised by MP Rauff Hakeem.

A total of Rs. 3.2 billion was spent on the purchase of COVID vaccines and rapid antigen test kits during the pandemic. Of this, Rs. 2.2 billion was spent on this company which was not even registered with the NMRA.

Meanwhile, Rs 3.2 billion was also spent on purchasing PCR kits. The total amount spent by the government on PCR kits and rapid antigen test kits was Rs. 6,422 million.

In a lengthy response to a question raised by MP Hakeem, Dr. Jayatissa also said there are 26 companies in the list. Out of these 26 companies, PCR kits and rapid antigens test kits have been purchased from seven companies. George Steuart & Company Ltd has provided rapid antigen test kits and PCR kits. However, the company called Divasa Pharma Ltdwhich provided Rs. 2 million worth of rapid antigen test kits, while the government has spentRs. 2, 200 million to purchase these rapid antigen test kits, is not an NMRA registered company.

Anuradhapura Prison Chief further remanded

Anuradhapura Prison Superintendent Mohan Karunaratne has been remanded until June 23 following his appearance before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court today (June 13).

Karunaratne was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on June 08 over the alleged unauthorized release of an inmate convicted of multiple counts of fraud and corruption under a presidential amnesty.

Order under the Convention Against Doping to be taken up on June 17

The Order under the Convention Against Doping in Sports Act, scheduled to be taken up for debate in Parliament on June 17 for the purpose of being passed, has received the approval of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Youth Affairs and Sports.

This approval was granted at the meeting of the said Committee held today (June 13) at Parliament, chaired by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage. 

Deputy Minister of Sports, Sugath Thilakaratne was also present at this Committee meeting held.

At the meeting, officials stated that, in relation to sports, Sri Lanka is legally updating the relevant regulations through this Gazette notification in accordance with the list published annually by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). It was further pointed out by the officials that certain substances are newly added to the list while some are removed from it. For instance, the substance “Caffeine” has now been removed from the list.

In addition, matters such as the possibility of obtaining the assistance of the Ministry of Sports for inter-university sports competitions, challenges related to establishing youth societies across the island, the shortage of youth service officers, and the need to develop sports including cricket at the rural level were raised by the MPs present at the meeting. Accordingly, the Minister instructed the relevant officials to take prompt action regarding these matters.Members of the Committee, Members of Parliament who are non-member members, and a group of officials including the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports were present at this committee meeting held.

Thusitha Halloluwa further remanded until June 20

Former Executive Director of the National Lotteries Board – Thusitha Halloluwa, has been further remanded until June 20 by the Fort Magistrate Court.

This is in relation to an investigation for the alleged misuse of a computer and mobile phone valued at over Rs.470,000, which were obtained during his tenure at the Board.
