Navy arrests 24 Indian fishermen for poaching

Five trawlers with 24 Indian fishermen were taken into custody for poaching in Sri Lanka’s waters off the Kovilan Lighthouse, Kareinagar, Jaffna, the Navy said.

They were arrested by Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard during a special operation in northern waters to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lanka’s waters on the evening of November 28.
The seized trawlers together with 24 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and they will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings.

Including the recent apprehension, the Navy has seized 35 Indian poaching trawlers and 252 Indian fishermen during operations conducted thus far in year 2022 and handed them over to the authorities for onward legal action.
