New LG Polls date to be announced today?; date remains blank on postponement notice

Published

on

The Election Commission is scheduled to announce the new date of the Local Government (LG) Elections today (03).

Although the local government election was scheduled to be held on March 9 this year, the Election Commission, which met on February 24, decided to postpone it due to the lack of funds and the delay in printing ballot papers.

Accordingly, the Election Commission said that the election will be postponed for a period of not less than 21 days.

However, the tenure of 339 LG institutions except Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha would come to an end on March 19.

According to the Election Commission, 59 recognised political parties and 329 independent groups have submitted their nominations for the election.

Date remains blank on postponement notice

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has informed the Assistant and Deputy Election Commissioners on March 01 to leave a blank space on the notice related to the postponement of LG polls and send it with the signature of the Returning Officer.

Along with the notice, the list of LG bodies of the respective district has also been notified to be sent in all three languages by yesterday (02).

The Returning Officer signed notice says, “The Election Commission upon inquiry notified that the LG Polls was postponed due to the non-receipt of money and therefore, ……………… will be declared as the new date of LG Polls.”
