Muslims in Sri Lanka are celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr today (March 31) after the Colombo Grand Mosque yesterday announced that the crescent (new moon) for the month of Shawwal has been sighted.
Eid al-Fitr is a “festival of breaking the fast” and marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
It is a religious holiday that is celebrated by Muslims from all over the world and involves a range of celebrations as friends, family and the entire Muslim community come together.
A significant part of the shared food is “Qurbani, a tradition of animal sacrifice and sharing the meat, with a portion traditionally given to the poor and needy. Wealthier Muslims allocate 2.5% of their annual income for charitable donations, known as Zakat. In Sri Lanka, where Muslims live among neighbours of other religious faiths, it is customary to share festive meals with them as well.
Sri Lanka Mirror extends warm wishes for a joyous Ramadan to all Muslim devotees in Sri Lanka celebrating today.
Eid Mubarak!
