Relatives allowed to visit inmates at Galle Prison again

The relatives of inmates at the Galle Prison have been granted permission to visit the prison again, the Department of Prisons said.

In recent days, visits to the prison were restricted due to the outbreak of a skin disease among the inmates.

Two inmates died as a result of the disease. Nine inmates have been hospitalised with four of them still undergoing treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

It was also said that the spread of the disease has been brought under control.

However, the Prisons Department said that the prisoners would not be taken out.

President – party leaders to meet tomorrow on US tariff impact

A meeting will take place tomorrow (April 10) at 11:00 am at the Presidential Secretariat, where President Anura Kumara Disanayake will engage in discussions with opposition party leaders about the impact of the new US reciprocal tariff system on Sri Lanka.  

During this meeting, it is expected to outline the steps the government has already implemented in response to the new US import tax policy.

Constable attached to SIS arrested

A Police Constable (PC) attached to the State Intelligence Service (SIS) has been arrested by the CID.

The arrested PC from the District Intelligence Bureau in Karadiyanaru, which is attached to the SIS.

He is arrested in connection with investigations into the murder of two police officers attached to the Vavunathivu Police Station in 2018, which is suspected to have been carried out by supporters of NTJ leader Zahran Hashim, who was behind the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The investigation into the murder has uncovered that the arrested constable had acted in a manner that misled investigations regarding the murder.

The CID is conducting further investigations into the incident.

Samantha to fill Kosala’s MP seat

The Election Commission has announced that Samantha Ranasinghe of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been elected as a Member of Parliament to fill the vacancy created by the passing of NPP Kegalle District MP, Kosala Nuwan Jayaweera.

Ranasinghe, who served as the Rambukkana Electoral Organizer of the National People’s Power during the 2024 parliamentary election, was next on the NPP list based on the preference votes obtained.

According to the official announcement, Ratnayake Mudiyanselage Samantha Ranasinghe has been elected as a Member of Parliament for the No. 22 – Kegalle Electoral District under Section 62 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981.
