Removing Deshabandu : Resolution to appoint Committee passed in Parliament

The Notice of Resolution to appoint a Committee of Inquiry to remove Inspector General of Police T. M. W. Deshabandhu Tennakoon from his post was passed in Parliament today (April 08).

The division on this Notice of Resolution was held at 5.45 pm today where 151 votes were cast in favor and no votes were received against it.

The resolution to appoint a Committee of Inquiry to remove IGP T. M. W. Deshabandhu Tennakoon from his post, signed by 115 MPs representing the ruling party, was handed over to the Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne on 25th of March 2025.

Proceeds of Crime Bill also passed 
Meanwhile, the second reading debate on the Proceeds of Crime Bill was also held today. After the second reading debate, the bill was considered in committee stage and the bill was then passed in Parliament today without amendments and without a division following the third reading.

This bill was presented to Parliament on 1st of March 2025.

Heavy rains expected in the afternoon

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 p.m. today (May 09).

Showers may occur in Western province and in Puttalam, Galle and Matara districts in the morning too.

Fairly heavy rains above 50 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-central provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning.

New Commissioner General appointed to Examinations Dept.

Subhashini Indika Kumari Liyanage has been appointed as the new Commissioner General of Examinations, effective immediately.

She succeeds H.J.M.C.A. Jayasundara, whose term ended on May 06, 2025.

Liyanage, a Special Grade Officer of the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service, previously served as an Examinations Commissioner in the Department of Examinations.

Her appointment was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
