School holidays are announced

The Education Ministry has announced this year’s holiday schedule for schools.

The Ministry had divided school terms into stages to facilitate New Year holidays as well as to conduct government examinations.

Accordingly, the first term would commence from March 27, 2023. After seven days of operation, the schools would be closed for the Sinhala Tamil New year holidays on April 05 for a period of 11 days.

Thereafter the second stage of the first term is to be held from April 17 to May 12. Thereafter once more a 11 day school holiday would be given on May 13 to 24,2023for G.C.E ordinary level exams from May 13 to 24.

Thereafter the third stage of the first term would start from May 25 to July 20. Thereafter a two day holiday stretching from April 21 to 23 was held to break school terms.

The second term would commence from July 24 to October 14 to November 12. Thereafter holidays would be given in order to hold the grade five scholarship and advanced level exams.

Suspect arrested in triple murder case

A suspect wanted in connection with a triple murder committed on February 02 in the Alegoda West area of Ambalantota has been arrested by the Ambalantota Police in the Biyagama Police Division yesterday (April 02).

The arrested individual is a 42-year-old resident of Mamadala, Ambalantota.

Three people were seriously injured after being attacked with sharp weapons during a dispute between two parties and all three had died after being admitted to the Ambalantota Hospital.

Further investigations are underway.

Heavy rainfall in some areas

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Southern, Eastern and Northern provinces today (03).

In its latest forecast, the department said that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere of the island during the afternoon or night.

Fairly heavy rainfall of above 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, North-western Uva and North-central provinces, it added.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces and in Kurunegala districts during the morning.

Thus, the general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Cargills Bank issues statement on cybersecurity incident

Private bank in Sri Lanka – Cargills Bank PLC has today (April 02) released another statement, updating the situation over a recent cyber security incident. 

Cargills Bank PLC notes that despite the incident, the bank’s core operations remain fully secure and functional. 

It adds that all banking services continue to function normally, and customers may carry out their transactions with complete confidence.

Previously, the bank had stated that an unauthorized party had claimed access to some of the bank’s data and subsequently published them. 

The matter is said to be possibly the largest data breach in the country’s history.

The matter was also taken up by journalists at today’s cabinet media briefing. Responding, Cabinet spokesman – Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that although the issue wasn’t taken up by the Cabinet Ministers yesterday, he believed that it may have been addressed by the Security Council.
