Several Bills to be tabled in Parliament this week

The Parliament is scheduled to convene from tomorrow (3) to October 6, Parliament Secretary-General Kushani Rohanadeera said.

The parliamentary affairs related to this week have been decided at the Consultative Committee on Parliamentary Affairs chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on September 22.

Accordingly, the 9.30-10.30 am period is reserved for questions that require oral answers on each day.

The Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Bill (Second Reading), Elections (Special Provisions) Bill (Second Reading), Orders under the Conciliation Boards (Special Disputes) Act and the Judicial Act are to be debated tomorrow from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm.

The adjournment debate brought by the Government will be held from 5.00 to 5.30 pm.

Three Proposed Regulations under the Customs Ordinance (published in Extraordinary Gazette Nos. 2336/72, 2338/54 and 2341/64), regulations under the Excise Duty Act (No. 2332/14, 2332/53, 2337/16 and 2340/45 published in the Extraordinary Gazette) and the Sri Lanka National Eye Bank Trust Bill (Second Reading) will be debated on Wednesday From 10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

The 5.00 to 5.30 p.m. time period during the adjournment debate is reserved for questions.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (Amendment) Bill (Second Reading), Civil Aviation (Amendment) Bill (Second Reading), Orders under the Civil Aviation Act are to be debated on Thursday, October 5, from 10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Then, the debate will be held from 5.00 to 5.30 pm during the proposal to adjourn Parliament.

The Secretary-General said that the adjournment debate on “Professionals leaving the country due to the economic crisis” is to be held on Friday, October 6 from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m based on a proposal brought by the Opposition.

Complete 3rd phase of Central Expressway by 2026 end – Vijitha

Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation – Vijitha Herath has urged to complete work of the 3rd phase of the Central Expressway by Dec. 31, 2026.

The 3rd phase spans from Pothuhera to Rambukkana.

The minister had said this after inspecting work at the section today (Nov. 09).

Govt refutes claims of shutting down ‘Thriposha’ company

The government has refuted reports claiming that Sri Lanka Thriposha Limited (SLTL) is to be closed down.

Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Finance has said no action has been taken or will be taken to liquidate the Thriposha Company.

The statement further notes that the Triposha programme to provide nutrition supplements to children and pregnant mothers will continue forward in a more effective manner.

58 Lankans arrested in Colombo over alleged online financial fraud

A group of 58 Sri Lankans has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (Nov. 08) while residing in a luxury apartment complex on Havelock Road, Colombo, over suspected involvement in an online financial fraud.

They were arrested on a tipoff received by the Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) of the CID and were to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (09).

Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa stated that the investigation commenced after a complaint received from a foreign embassy in Sri Lanka. He stated that the funds in question belong to a Korean national residing in South Korea and that funds valued at approximately Rs. 300 million were defrauded.

He added that a 52-year-old woman from Colombo 07, who served as a director, and a 40-year-old man from Ragama, who acted as a manager, are among the arrested persons.
