Three-wheeler catches fire in Gampola

A three-wheeler travelling through Gampola city caught on fire near the hospital.

A family (parents and children) from Millagahamula has been travelling in the vehicle.

The fire erupted when the vehicle was moving forward about 50 meters after pumping fuel from a filling station. Although the people tried to put out the fire, the three-wheeler was completely destroyed.

It has been difficult to put out the fire since there is no fire fighting unit in the Gampola Municipality, it was reported.

It was also reported that about 5 three-wheelers have caught fire along this road in the last few months alone.

Showery conditions to enhance

Enhanced showery conditions are expected during the next few days, due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.

According to the Department of Meteorology,  showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most provinces of the island after 1.00 p.m.

Heavy showers more than 100mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, Southern and Uva provinces.

Showers may occur at Eastern and Southern provinces during the morning as well.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Grace marks for out-of-syllabus questions in O/L Science paper

It has been decided to award grace marks for several questions of the 2023 (2024) G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination’s Science paper.

The announcement was made in response to concerns raised over alleged irregularities taking place during the O/L examination, where certain questions included in the Science examination paper were found to be out of the syllabus.

The Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara stated that grace marks will be given only for the problematic questions in the Science examination paper.

SC concludes hearing petitions against ‘Sri Lanka Electricity Bill’

The Supreme Court has concluded its hearing of the petitions filed challenging the proposed Sri Lanka Electricity Bill, which includes proposed reforms for the electricity sector.

Accordingly, the court announced that it will inform the determination to the Speaker of Parliament confidentially.

The petitions were heard before the three-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices Vijith Malalgoda, Shiran Gunaratne and Arjuna Obeysekera for three consecutive days.

The petitions were submitted by 14 parties including the secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Workers’ Union, Ranjan Jayalal.
