Sri Lankan journalists win Ladli Awards for Gender Sensitivity

For the first time in history, two Sri Lankan journalists have won the prestigious Laadli South Asia Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity.

Vineetha M. Gamage, Assistant News Editor at the Mawbima newspaper and senior journalist Former Head of Channel Eye Sunanda Hettiarachchi won the awards in Mumbai, India on Dec. 12.

Laadli, the media advocacy campaign of Population First, has been giving Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) and for gender sensitive journalism since 2007.

The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity are unique in the world. They celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of individuals and organisations in the media and advertising industry who, through their work, highlight gender concerns. The awards are supported by UNFPA.

Google maps error leads drunken men to scale wall of ‘Temple Trees’

Two individuals who scaled the wall of ‘Temple Trees,’ the official residence of the Prime Minister in Colombo, have cited a Google Maps error for their presence within the highly fortified premises. 

The suspects, aged 28, claimed that they were following Google Maps directions to their rented residence on Muhandiram Road when the route ended near a large wall.

According to their confession, after having drinks at a bar in Kollupitiya, they believed their residence was on the other side of the wall and decided to scale it. 

Officers of the Prime Minister’s Security Division apprehended the individuals, subsequently handing them over to the Kollupitiya Police.

The suspects, one working as a software engineer and the other as a merchant seaman, were released on Police bail. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 14.

Winning the toss, Bangladesh invited the visitors to bat first, where the visiting Sri Lankans scored 206/3 before limiting the Bangladesh team to 203/8.

Fuel prices revised

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (Ceypetco) has announced that fuel prices will be revised with effect from midnight today (March 04).

Accordingly, prices of Petrol Octane 92 and Auto Diesel have remain unchanged.

Meanwhile, the prices of Petrol Octane 95, Super Diesel and Kerosene have been reduced.

A litre of Petrol Octane 95 has been reduced by Rs. 09 to Rs.447, while a litre of Super Diesel has been reduced Rs. 10 to Rs.458. The price of a Kerosene litre too, has been reduced by Rs. 05 to Rs. 257.
