Up-Country People’s Front Leader and Nuwara Eliya SJB MP V. Radhakrishnan said it appears that steps are being taken to prevent the local government election from being held by delaying the allocation of funds to the Election Commission.

MP Radhakrishnan expressed these views at a press conference held following a rally held in Talawakele last evening (05) to introduce the Up-Country People’s Front candidates contesting from Nuwara Eliya to the members of the party.

He said the people are demanding a local government election, and if there is no provision to hold the elections, the salaries and allowances of the 225 MPs should be suspended for two months and the election should be held utilizing this amount.

Despite the economic crisis, a colossal amount has been spent on the Independence Day celebration and the MP said the celebration should have been held at a reduced cost.

He also said that the prices of essential food items, electricity bills and gas prices have increased.

“Therefore, the people in the plantation sector did not display a national flag in front of the house for the 75th Independence Day. No blessings were offered in Hindu temples either,” he said.
