Chinese ambassador meets Parliament Speaker (Pics)

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka – Mr. Qi Zhenhong recently met with the newly elected Speaker of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka – Dr. Asoka Ranwala.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.
The Chinese Ambassador conveyed the greetings of the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China – Mr. Zhao Leji, to Dr. Ranwala during the meeting.

Recalling the long-standing cooperation between Sri Lanka and China, the new Speaker expressed his hope to further strengthen relations between the two countries under the new government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. 

During the meeting, the Chinese Ambassador stated that it is important to further strengthen relations between the legislative bodies of the two countries, and that it is important to establish the Sri Lanka-China Parliamentary Friendship Association in the Tenth Parliament as well.

In addition, attention was also paid to expanding cooperation between the two countries in a number of areas, including economic development, agriculture-related issues including hybrid seed development, water management, crude oil refining, foreign investment and export promotion.

Fmr. prison superintendent’s murder : suspected shooter arrested

The suspect allegedly responsible for the recent shooting of the retired Superintendent of the Boossa Prison was arrested this morning (15) by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while attempting to leave the country through the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake.

The arrest was made at the departure terminal with the assistance of the “Face Recognition System” installed by the CID at the airport.

The suspect was reportedly apprehended while preparing to board SriLankan Airlines flight UL-404 to Bangkok, Thailand, using a forged passport.

The individual has been identified as Wijemuni Lalantha Prithiraj Kumara, 31, a resident of Kuleewatta, Ambalangoda.

He is reportedly the primary shooter and an associate of the organized criminal gang leader in the Southern Province known as “Karandeniya Sudda.”

The suspect was in possession of a fraudulent passport issued under the name Ekanayake Mudiyanselage Lakindu Sandeep Bandara.

He is also wanted by the police in connection with multiple murders and financial fraud cases in the Galle and Ambalangoda police divisions.

The arrest took place at approximately 7:50 a.m. today. He was later escorted out of the BIA premises by a team of officers, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Ambalangoda Police Headquarters, at around 10:00 a.m. today for further investigation.

412 admitted to National Hospital during the New Year

A total of 412 patients have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital during the two-day New Year holiday period from April 13 and 14, due to accidents.

Speaking at a media briefing, Director of the Hospital’s Accident Ward – Dr. Indika Jagoda said that 06 of them were pronounced dead on admission.110 of them had sustained injuries in household accidents while 94 patients had faced road accidents.

Surgeries had to be performed on about 80 of the patients, he further added.

However, only 02 patients had been admitted due to firework-related accidents.

A/L results expected by end of April

Results of the G.C.E. Advanced Level examinations held last year are expected to be released by the end of this month, according to Commissioner General of Examinations – Amith Jayasundara.

The 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination was held from November 25 to December 20 last year.

3,33,185 candidates – including 2,53,390 school applicants and 79,795 private candidates, sat for the exam at 2,312 centers islandwide.
