Dasun Shanaka fined

Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Dasun Shanaka has been fined US$10,000 by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for traveling to Sri Lanka and returning to Dubai on the same day while playing for the Dubai Capitals in the UAE’s International League T20. The fine was imposed for violating regulations by traveling outside Sri Lanka without registering as a professional player.
The incident occurred when Shanaka was requested by SSC Cricket Secretary Ashan De Silva to return to Sri Lanka for a crucial Inter-Club First Division match against Moors at the Sara Oval. Despite SSC’s struggles in the tournament, Shanaka delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 123 runs off 87 balls, including 8 sixes and 10 fours. He then flew back to Dubai the same day and contributed 34 runs off 12 balls for the Dubai Capitals in a T20 match against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.

SLC clarified that no additional disciplinary charges were filed against Shanaka during the investigation. Reports indicate that several parties have offered to pay the fine on his behalf.

During the match against Moors, Shanaka was struck in the neck by a ball while attempting a sweep shot. He was examined by sports medicine specialist Dr. Ruwan Jayasuriya, who provided a fitness certificate confirming the injury would not affect his ability to play after a short rest.

Despite the controversy, Shanaka continued to play, featuring in SSC’s final preliminary-round match against NCC last weekend.
