Presidential Sports Awards not been held in 4 years

Published

on

The annual Presidential Sports Awards ceremony has not been held since 2018.

The 2019 awards ceremony has not been held despite making all the preparations.

The reason for this is said to be former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa ordering that the awards ceremony be held for both years including 2020 and the passing away of Chairman of the jury Saman Amarasinghe due to Covid-19.

Sports events were not held in 2020 at the national and international level due to Covid-19, and many talented athletes participated in the SAF Games held in 2019 were selected for awards.

Following the death of Mr. Amarasinghe, Mr. Nalin Artigala was appointed as the Chairman of the jury. However, the awards ceremony was still not held.

It was reported that it is possible to get sponsorship from Sri Lanka Telecom or companies like Dialog Axiata to hold the ceremony if money is an obstacle.

It was also reported that Sri Lanka Telecom has also sponsored a number of minor sports award ceremonies in the past.
