Today is Bak Full Moon Poya Day

Today marks Navam Full Moon Poya day.

Buddhists around the world mark the day with reverence as many significant events in Buddhist history took place on such a day.

It is on such a Full Moon Poya Day that Lord Buddha appointed Arahaths Sariputra and Moggalyanya as his chief disciples.

The first-ever Buddhist congregation was also held on a day such as today.

Incidentally, it is on a Navam Full Moon Poya Day that Lord Buddha  preached the Ovadha Prathimoksha – which provides guildelines for am ordained Bhikkhu .

Another significant event which occurred on Navam Full Moon Poya Day is the announcement made by Lord Buddha that he would attain Parinibbana on Vesak Full Moon Poya Day .

Viyalendiran further remanded (Update)

Former State Minister S. Viyalendiran has been further remanded, as he was unable to fulfil the conditions set for bail, reports say.

Viyalendiran granted bail

Former State Minister Sathasivam Viyalendiran, who was arrested and remanded over bribery charges, has been granted bail after being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali ordered Viyalendiran to be released on five sureties of Rs. 01 million each and a cash bail of Rs. 50,000.

The court also imposed an overseas travel ban on the former State Minister.

Cabinet approval to purchase 15 mn. polycarbonate cards to issue e-NICs

Cabinet approval has been granted to a proposal by the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Digital Economy, to purchase 15 million polycarbonate cards to issue new electronic National Identity Cards (e-NIC).

The purchase is to be done following the procurement procedure of international competitive bidding for the fulfillment of said requirement.

It has been recognized that there is a requirement of 17 million cards for the re-registration of Sri Lankan persons and issuance of new identity cards. 

Electronic National Identity Cards should be issued to every person who has completed 15 years of age under the new procedure of the Electronic National Identity Card Project (e-NIC) that is due to be implemented in the future.

Singapore’s Vitol Asia granted 6-month CPC fuel supply deal

Cabinet approval has been granted to award a contract to Singapore-based Vitol Asia Ltd. to supply five shipments of 92 octane petrol, over the next six months.

A total of seven suppliers had submitted bids to supply shipments of 92 octane petrol to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) from April 15, 2025 to October 14, 2025.

Accordingly, approval has been granted for the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy to award the procurement to the lowest responsive bidder, Vitol Asia Ltd. in Singapore, based on the recommendations of the Standing Procurement Committee and the Special Standing Procurement Committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers.
