Gr. 5 scholarship :  Paper marking suspended for 2 weeks

Published

on

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has ordered the suspension of marking the answer scripts of the grade five scholarship examination following a demand by the parents to re-conduct the examination as some of the questions had leaked ahead of the exam.

The directive came after some of the parents met with the President on Monday night.

The parents pointed out that as many as eight questions had leaked, though officials claimed that only three had leaked in advance.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath briefing journalists at the post-cabinet news conference said that the parents have been told to produce evidence regarding their claim.

However, Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said that police investigations revealed that eight questions had leaked.

The Education Ministry earlier planned to provide full marks for the three questions that had leaked, but parents have refused to accept that as a solution.

The government has decided to abolish the project launched under former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to upgrade 671 provincial schools as national schools.

Under the project, each school was allocated Rs.02 million – totaling over Rs.1340 million – for emergency renovations and new national school name boards, with some costing over Rs.500,000.

Schools have now been instructed to remove these boards, along with the “National School” title, official seals, and letterheads, and revert to their previous identities.

The initiative aimed to increase the number of national schools to 329,000, but only 05 schools in the Western Province were converted.

Professor Kapila Perera, Secretary of the Ministry of Education at that time, now serves as Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Highways.
